"In a wide-ranging interview with a handful of journalists in Midrand on Saturday, Elop told the story of Lasse Viren. Viren was a little-known Finnish athlete who came to prominence in his homeland in 1971. Not much was expected from the athlete at the 1972 Olympics, but incredibly he made the final. In the 12th lap of the 10 000 metres race, he became tangled with another runner and fell. His race was as good as over. But Viren jumped up, closed the gap with the leaders in less than 150 metres and produced an astonishing final 600 metres to win and set a new world record in the process.
He says he’s told Nokia employees this story. Nokia is Viren, he adds. The company has tripped and fallen. But it’s up again and running again."
